The Topnaars

The Topnaar community lives on the edge of the Namib Desert along the Kuiseb River, where the nutritious Nara melon grows naturally. This prickly plant is harvested by the Topnaars and processed into natural products such as soaps, creams and lotions. Thanks to the COSDEF OYETU Outreach Project, they have learned craftsmanship in leatherworking and making jewellery from locally found materials. Their handmade products now provide an important source of income and strengthen the economic position of their community and surrounding villages.
